The Surface Design Show and Tile of Spain

The Surface Design Show, 8-10 February, 2022, held at the Business Design Centre, welcomed more than 100 exhibiting companies and organisations displaying a wide range of surface materials from around the world, mainly for floors, walls, ceilings and external cladding. The theme of this year’s exhibition was, ‘A Sense of Place’, highlighting the well-being of the planet and sustainability.

Decorative finish experts Armourcoat previewed their new natural lime plaster finish ‘Clime’, an interesting addition to its sustainable portfolio.

Exhibitions included a natural stone section, specialists in architectural lighting, 32 ‘New Talents’, innovative tactile materials and an award ceremony encompassing 228 entries from 24 countries.

Surface Matter, located in London Fields, an exciting destination for designers, makers and manufacturers to meet and to sample and explore materials in different formats presented an inspirational pop-up stand.

Leading provider of hand-silvered antiqued mirror glass, Rough Old Glass, exhibited stunning examples of Cloud, Fluted and Antiqued Gold Swathe mirrored glass made to bespoke sizes for feature walls, splash backs and framed hanging mirrors.

Metalclad showed their range of extraordinary patinated metals for decorative surface covering in Marbled, Blue Veiled and Fossil Antiqued Brass and Dark Mottled or Heavy Verdigris Copper finishes.

Tile of Spain, a highlight at the Surface Design Show and the face of the Spanish tile industry, represents more than 120 manufacturers belonging to the Spanish Tile Manufacturers Association (ASCER). Drawing on a rich heritage of craftsmanship, Tile of Spain provides and distributes ceramic and porcelain tiles worldwide in a huge scope of colours, shapes, finishes and patterns.

New designs featured digitally printed ceramic tiles that appear to be hand-crafted in an artisan’s studio, yet are high performance tiles which are easily installed and maintained.

Other examples of innovation include the Bow series by Harmony, inspired by Mediterranean ridged roof tiles, developed by Alberto Sanchez and Eduardo Villalon of MUT design.

The Element range by Keros features a spectrum of glazed, matt and patterned tiles in hexagonal, octagonal and mosaic formats to combine harmoniously with its collection of rectangular and square tiles.

Large-scale porcelain tiles in contemporary finishes are sought after for both residential and commercial flooring and wall installations and are also ideal for kitchen islands, counter tops and splashbacks.

The Spanish tile industry is well-known for its technical porcelain solutions for a variety of environments. For example, Decocer’s Crag range is frost-resistant and ideal for indoor and outdoor settings.

Argenta’s Carpenter Collection is designed and developed with anti-bacterial properties, a feature which has become particularly relevant during the global pandemic.

Many porcelain tile designs imitate natural raw materials with striking verisimilitude. One such example is Arklam Calacatta Gold, rivalling pure marble for opulent effect. Unlike genuine marble, porcelain tiles are easy to install and maintain as the surface is highly water resistant.
