London architectural salvage and design practice Retrouvius has been involved in the second phase of refurbishment at The George in Rye, a hotel in East Sussex, which has now expanded into adjoining buildings including a twin hayloft. After the completion and opening of the first phase of rooms in 2006, Maria Speake of Retrouvius and Katie Clarke of The George in Rye have collaborated on ten more rooms. Each room developed an individual identity through texture and material, and through Katie and Maria’s love of bold print and textiles.

The Hayloft bedroom. The two haylofts are part of the original building and required listed building consent for conversion. Katie wanted to keep a simple Scandinavian feel: light wood, subtle seaside colours and a sprinkling of Hans Wegner furniture completed this airy gabled getaway.
The Raoul Room. The gorgeous hand print panel by Raoul Textiles was on display on the George Smith stand at Decorex last year. Katie used her excellent bargaining skills with “Mrs Raoul” and was able to re-house this splendid piece.
Bright rubber flooring was used in all the bathrooms.
