Clare Mosley’s eglomisé glass

Gilder Clare Mosley makes eglomisé mirrors and panels, decorated crystal lampbases and a range of water gilded and toned curtain finials. Everything is handmade in her London workshop using traditional methods and authentic materials.  Her eglomisé glass panels have been used by decorators in hallways, dining rooms, kitchens, bathrooms and bedrooms. Eglomisé is the technique of laying silver and gold leaf onto glass which gives the effect of mirror. The finish is softer than modern mirror and can be toned to the customer’s choice.

Eglomisé gives the effect of mirror but with a softer reflection. All frames can be made in silver or gold leaf, on a gesso base. The water gilding is sealed after toning to protect it.

Clare’s lampbases are exact copies of early 19th century shapes and are made in England from hand blown crystal. Being crystal the glass is very clear and so colours remain true and matching customers fabric or paint colours for the lamps is easily achieveable. Decorated on the inside, they have a beautiful surface which is easy to clean.

Clare studied painting at Camberwell school of Arts and Crafts, then worked for Thomas Messel, furniture designer and maker, followed by Arnold Wiggins and Sons, frame makers and suppliers of antique frames of a very high quality. She went to live in Paris where she started making copies of antique gilded objects – lights, curtain finials etc. and pioneered the technique of Eglomise glass gilding , using it in a modern way.  She makes bespoke pieces to suit customers’ decoration.

Not shown here is her wide range of curtain finials and accessories – all copies of antique shapes. Hand carved or moulded, with a water gilded finish, available in bright or toned gold or silver. Gessoed curtain poles, with a laquered and wood-grained finish, can also be supplied.
