Dale Saylor and Joe Williamson’s laundry room

This mudroom in Dale Saylor and Joe Williamson’s 1927 craftsman’s cottage in upstate New York doubles as a laundry room and is furnished with a four-foot-long soapstone sink and a large collection of galvanised zinc items.

Although soapstone has traditionally been used for sinks and wash tubs in the US since the 1800s, it’s more difficult to source in the UK. So we’ve found an alternative… This bespoke washing trough with fishtank splashback and bib taps is made by GEC Anderson, who will fabricate all types of integrated and free-standing sinks or worktops in stainless steel.


Akari shades from Chelsea LightingAkari Lights were designed and first made by Isamu Noguchi in 1951. ‘Akari’ means light in Japanese and these Shoji paper sculptures (there are over 100 versions, as table lamps, standard lamps or pendant lights) still look as modern as they did over 60 years ago.
