Concrete Shelving

A large grey polished concrete shelving unit dominates one wall of the kitchen in this house in Sri Lanka.

Architect: Geoffrey Bawa

We asked Paul Davies Design, specialists in poured concrete surfaces (including worktops and floors) about these concrete shelves, which appear to be made in cast concrete. They explained that making them using this method would be extremely expensive. The floor shown here, on the other hand, would be no problem…

Designfinger suggest a different solution. They say that the uprights could be installed with the shelves bolted to give rigidity if the book case is free-standing. Or the shelves could have hidden rail fixings and supports so would be fully adjustable. Also, the uprights and shelves could be chunky or very slender, depending on the effect required.
